What you will need (with clickable affiliate links)

  1. Yarn:
    Large: Fingering weight yarn (13.5 oz / 375 gms / 1800 yards / 1700 m) – For making the pictured shawl, I used one Scheepjes Whirl in color Passion Fruit Melt and approximately one and three quarters of  Scheepjes Whireltte in color Rose.
    Small: Fingering weight yarn (10 oz / 275 gms / 1250 yards / 1200 m)
  2. 4 mm crochet hook
  3. Scissors
  4. Tapestry needle
  5. Stitch markers (optional)

Gauge

8 rows of 6 sc stitches is a 1” square

It is not important to match my gauge exactly for this shawl. You can use any yarn with an appropriate hook to make it and the pattern will not change. The size of your shawl will vary depending on your style of crocheting and tension. I used a slightly larger hook than recommended on the yarn label for this shawl because I wanted it to be drapey. 

Sizing

Small: 30” along the center and 70” from tip to tip
Large: 34” along center, 79” wingspan from tip to tip

Abbreviations

  1. ch – chain
  2. ch-sp – chain space
  3. sc – single crochet – Insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook, yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.
  4. cs – crab stitch – Insert hook into the previous stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook, yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.
  5. sts – stitch(es)

Pattern Repetitions

  1. increp – (sc, ch2, sc) in next ch2 sp [2 sc sts]
  2. mossrep1 – (sc in next ch sp, ch) * 18 [18 sc sts]
  3. mossrep2 – (ch, sc in next ch sp) * 18 [18 sc sts]
  4. chevrep – mossrep1, increp, mossrep2 [38 sc sts]
    If the pattern calls for a chevrep followed by another chevrep, you must skip 2 sc stitches in between the two chevrep repeats.

Pattern Notes

  1. This pattern is written in US terms. 
  2. I strongly recommend viewing the support video mentioned in the Resources section before you start making your shawl.
  3. The number of stitches for every row are mentioned in brackets at the end of each row.
  4. I recommend using stitch markers to mark your peaks (increases) and valleys (decreases). That will make it easy to identify where you should make your increases and decreases until you figure the pattern out and then you can choose to stop using the stitch markers.
  5. I also recommend using stitch markers to mark any stitches that you may be consistently missing – for instance, there is a decrease on every row on one side of the shawl and is easy to forget.
  6. You can change color at will. While making my shawl, I always changed color on one side (the longest edge of the shawl) so that the ends that needed to be hidden were all on the same side. See the COLORS section for color changes in my shawl.
  7. The charts and written instructions are meant to be followed independent of each other. The repeats in the charts and the written instructions are different and the charts should NOT be used as an aid for the written pattern.

Border

I added a border on the longest edge of my shawl because I carried the yarn along the edge while changing color. By adding a border, I was able to conceal the loose yarn and give my shawl a very sturdy border. 

After the last row of the shawl, do not cut the yarn. You can continue working crab stitches with the same yarn along the edge you would like to add a border to. I recommend seeing the support video mentioned in the RESOURCES section if you need help with this.

Blocking

After completing your shawl, use your preferred method of blocking to block it. See the RESOURCES section if you need help with this.
