The Ruffled Waters Shawl is a really enjoyable make — the kind of pattern you just want to keep picking up! It’s aimed at advanced beginners and works up alternating bands of knit stitch and a lace stitch, creating a design that has a lovely rhythm to it once you get going. The triangle shawl is worked center out in fingering weight yarn, giving it an amazing drape that makes it as wearable as it is beautiful.
I made mine in Scheepjes Whirl, which turned out to be a wonderful match for this pattern. Color changing yarn really elevates this shawl, and the blue tones that ran through towards the ruffle at the end were just perfect. It’s one of those happy accidents that makes you love a finished project even more!
This shawl reminds me of the calm of the ocean that breaks into waves close to the shore. And, that’s the reason I named it ‘Ruffled Waters’.

How to read repeat instructions in the pattern
(…) * 2 times – Repeat the instruction in the brackets twice.
e.g. (dec, yo) * 2 times = (dec, yo), (dec, yo)
stitch * 2 times – Repeat the given stitch twice.
e.g. tss * 2 times = tss, tss
Pattern notes
- The return pass for every row is the same. For this reason, you will not find instructions for it along with the forward pass instructions.
- Reverse Pass: ch1, (yo, pull through two loops)* all the way till the end of the row.
- The number of loops that must be on your hook at the end of the forward pass is mentioned in square brackets in the second column for every row.
- Skip the first vertical bar of every previous row (the one right under the one on the hook). The loop on the hook will count as the first stitch for every row.
- Each row is made up of odd number of stitches. The stitches at the center of each row form the spine of the shawl. The pattern on the left and right sides of that stitch are mirror images of each other. I recommend using a stitch marker to mark that stitch and move it up after every few rows.
- This shawl is made with alternating bands of the Mori Lace Pattern and the Tunisian Knit Stitch.
- IMPORTANT: Please read the edging instructions before you start making your shawl.

Then add one to every 7th stitch. That will leave 4 stitches in the end. The stitch markers will mark the beginning of each repeat in the following rows. I created another section of the edge on this row. You can find the edging instructions here. ![]() |

Edging and weaving in ends
Cut the yarn and weave in the end. Then, pick up the beginning tail and seam the edge together as shown below before weaving in.
If you are working with solid yarn, then you can make the edge now – follow the Edging Instructions.
Blocking
Depending on your yarn, you can choose to steam / wet block your shawl. I wet blocked mine by hanging it on a clothes line and used tiny clips to add weight to stretch the fabric.

Edging
If you are working with solid / variegated yarn, you can make your edging after you complete your shawl.

Instructions:
Step 1: Join yarn at the first stitch of the last row of the shawl.
Step 2: Make a single crochet stitch in the first stitch of each row all the way to the first row (this is the center of the longest edge of the triangle). Then, continue to make single crochet stitches in the last stitch of each row all the way to the last row.
Step 3: Cut yarn and weave in ends.
Note: Some variegated yarns may require doing the edging differently. Follow the video tutorials and use your judgement to figure out if you need to use another method instead.

If you are making stripes of different colors, you can make your edging after you complete your shawl.
Instructions:
Step 1: Join yarn at the first stitch of the last row of the shawl (Use the same color as that row).
Step 2: ** Join next color when a color transition happens in the shawl **
Make a single crochet stitch in the first stitch of each row all the way to the first row (this is the center of the longest edge of the triangle). Then, continue to make single crochet stitches in the last stitch of each row all the way to the last row.
Step 3: Cut all yarn and weave in ends.

Making the edging with gradient yarn is slightly more tricky because of the gradual color change. To do this, I made parts of the edging as the shawl progressed so that I could use the same color that the previous section was made with.

Hi, I love this shawl so much. It was my second ever tunisian project. The first one was the Turquoise Fiesta Shawl, which turned out also very pretty! I hope you will design a lacy shawl in the future...
