Tunisian Blanket CAL 2025

Sona Blanket

Welcome to the Tunisian Blanket CAL of 2025! I’m so excited to share the Sona Blanket, this year’s project for our sixth annual blanket CAL!

The Inspiration Behind the Sona Blanket

Years ago, during one of my many visits to the library, I stumbled upon a book on blackwork embroidery. This hidden gem in the arts and crafts section introduced me to intricate, geometric patterns that stayed with me. At the time, I didn’t even know of Tunisian crochet. It’s amazing how some things come together so perfectly!

Last year, I decided to bring those patterns to life in a new way—through Tunisian Mosaic Crochet. It wasn’t an easy journey – there were countless swatches, tiny adjustments, and many tweaks, but the result was worth it. I believe this blanket is the perfect blend of two fiber crafts, drawing inspiration from one and transforming it into another using modern crochet techniques.

We recently concluded the Tunisian Blanket CAL of 2024, which focused on the Tunisian-In-The-Round technique. In addition to the hexagons provided in the CAL, participants came up with many creative designs of their own. Before we delve into the details of this year’s CAL, take a look at my completed Tunisian Blanket from the 2024 CAL:

This year’s CAL is designed for intermediate-level participants, as it involves working diagonal overlaid stitches to create beautiful Blackwork designs. If you’re new to this technique, don’t worry—I’ve created a detailed course covering Blackwork with Tunisian Mosaic Crochet, where I share everything I’ve learned from my own experiences.

As always, the focus will be on learning and supporting each other. Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, there will be plenty of opportunities to learn and grow together.

You can find all the projects created by participants in previous years’ CALs and join this year’s CAL in the KnitterKnotter Hangout Group.

About the Sona Blanket

The Sona blanket is made up of 69 squares:

  • 25 large squares
  • 44 small squares
  • Plus, a practice square to help you get started with the technique.

Each square has its own unique design, and together with a mosaic border, they create a lovely Tunisian mosaic blanket.

Why “Sona”?

The name “Sona” means Gold in Hindi, inspired by the golden tones I used in my blanket. It reflects the warmth and joy this project brought me, and I hope it brings the same to you.

Tunisian Blanket CAL 2025 Details

This will be a free CAL where we’ll create 70 squares, with each square featuring a different blackwork pattern. New squares will be released according to the schedule below, at 10 AM Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) on Tuesdays.

In response to feedback from last year, many participants wanted to start joining their squares / hexagons before the CAL ended. To accommodate this, I’ll be sharing the joining and border instructions earlier in the year. The border is created separately and joined with the squares so it can be created independantly and releasing the instructions early gives you time to make it in parallel with your squares.

The written instructions and blackwork chart for each square will be available for free on the blog. Additionally, you can download the chart with the extended stitch indicators for each square for free, but it will only be available for 24 hours starting at 10 AM Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) on the day of the release.

Pattern

The pattern for this CAL will include:

  • General instructions for the CAL, including supplies needed and stitch tutorials
  • Written instructions for each square
  • A chart for each square
  • Written instructions for the border
  • Support videos

There will be 3 ways to get the patterns of this CAL:

#1 Free on the Blog

This page will be the central hub for all content related to the CAL on my blog. Be sure to check the schedule and visit this page on each release day to access the latest square instructions.

* The chart with the extended stitch indicators will be downloadable only on the release day, available for 24 hours starting at 10 AM Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

To avoid missing a block or the chance to download the free chart, sign up for my newsletter. I’ll send you a reminder whenever a new block is released!

#2 Ebook

The patterns will be available for purchase as an Ebook. By purchasing the Ebook, you’ll receive the PDF versions of all the squares and the border pattern as they are released. The Ebook will be available to purchase from two places (Ravelry and a non-Ravelry platform).

* Since this is a year-long CAL, purchasing the Ebook means you won’t receive all the patterns at once. Instead, you’ll get each new pattern based on the CAL’s release schedule.

Here is why you’d want the Ebook:

  • You won’t need to keep track of the release schedule to download the chart each time a new pattern is released.
  • There will be no ads in the Ebook.
  • The PDF version will be print-friendly and include:
    • List of supplies and general information about the blanket.
    • Written instructions for every square and the border.
    • Charts for every square.
    • Bonus empty charts (one of each size) for creating your own square patterns.
  • You’ll have lifetime access to work at your own pace.

#3 Ebook and Ad-free Videos

You will get everything mentioned in #2 along with access to ad-free video tutorials with all the material presented in a course format so you can download the PDFs and view the videos all in one place.

Here’s a comparison of all the different options for you to decide which one will work best for you:

Note: All videos and pattern documents will be available in English.

Technique and Difficulty

Note: This blanket is created using the Tunisian Mosaic Crochet technique. For those who participated in my 2023 CAL or completed my course A Beginner’s Guide to Tunisian Mosaic Crochet, please note that this technique differs significantly. I made several key adjustments to the original method I taught in 2023, making this an intermediate-level technique. The pattern will come with video support to guide you through the process.

IntermediateThis pattern is classified as intermediate, but it can be considered advanced if you choose to use black yarn.

Yarn

You can use any yarn for this blanket, but I recommend choosing DK or sport weight yarn in at least two contrasting colors to really make the pattern pop – Be sure to check that the yarn doesn’t bleed color before starting your final project.

For my blanket, I used Hawthorne DK yarn by WeCrochet in the following colors:

Yarn Bundle

Yarn bundles for this pattern will be available on WeCrochet.com, featuring handpicked colors chosen by me. I made some samples using the colors I considered for my own blanket, and you can see them below. You’re welcome to choose a full bundle or mix and match to create your own unique combination. If you prefer a bold look, feel free to experiment with different shades to make a bright and colorful blanket!

  1. Smoky Horizon: Astoria Tonal & Bare [Click here to purchase bundle]
  2. Lavender Mist: Sweet Home Tonal & Bare [Click here to purchase bundle]
  3. Coastal Jade: Springfield Tonal & Bare [Click here to purchase bundle]
  4. Frosted Wine: Hood River Tonal & Bare
  5. Classic: Blackbird Kettle & Bare
  6. Sona Snow: Gold Hill Tonal & Bare
  7. Sona: Blackbird Kettle & Gold Hill Tonal [Click here to purchase bundle]

This yardage mentioned above is for the entire blanket as shown in the picture. If you’d prefer a different layout or want to make only one size of squares (either small or large), you can calculate the amount of yarn needed using the yardage listed below.

Here’s a breakdown of the approximate yardage for the different squares and other parts of the blanket:

  • Large squares: 28 g of each color
  • Small squares: 7 g of each color
  • Border: 250 g of each color
  • Joining and finishing: 150 g of Blackbird Kettle

Note: While working on my blanket, I noticed that the yarn stained my Denise hook, and I was unable to remove the stain. However, I can confirm that the colors did not bleed when I wet blocked my squares.

Here are some other DK weight yarns you can use to make your blanket:

Hook

Pick a hook that is compatible with the yarn you chose. I usually make a gauge swatch with a few different hooks before I pick one. The gauge swatch will give you a good idea of how the fabric will work up and if you would like it to be more or less drapey.

For my squares and the border, I used a 6.5 mm (K-10.5) Tunisian crochet hook. To join the squares and add the finishing touches to the blanket, I used a 5.5 mm (I-9) crochet hook.

Note: This project does NOT require a double-ended hook. The border is worked flat and will need a long cord that can accommodate 265 stitches at once.
