Tunisian crochet tutorial – Overlay Double Crochet

I was looking for a way to create overlay stitches for a design I was working on but I couldn’t find one so I came up with this technique to make Overlay Simple stitches and Double Crochet stitches. It worked out beautifully and I was able to use it to make my Madhu blanket 🙂

The hook

There are a bunch of different Tunisian crochet hooks available for purchase. You can read about the hooks I use here. Because of the nature of Tunisian crochet stitches, I recommend using a hook that is at least 2 sizes larger than the recommended hook on the yarn.

In this tutorial you will see how to make overlay stitches in Tunisian Reverse Stitches. To be able to make this stitch, it is important to understand the anatomy of the Tunisian Reverse Stitch. In the image below, the blue arrows point to the two parts of the back vertical bar in the Tunisian Reverse Stitch – we use these to make an overlay stitch above the reverse stitch. The pink arrow points to the front vertical bar and the back vertical bar that is right behind it – we use these to make an overlay stitch below the reverse stitch.

This tutorial is divided in two parts: 1) Make overlay stitches above a Reverse Stitch and 2) Make overlay stitches below a Reverse Stitch. You will be able to see the difference in both towards the end of the tutorial.

Forward Pass (Above the Reverse Stitch)

Step 1: Make Knit Stitches until the point where you have to make your Overlay Double Crochet.

Step 2: Locate the Reverse Stitch from three rows back that sits right below the next stitch. Now, yarn over, locate the two sections of the back vertical bar (indicated by the blue arrows in the picture at the beginning of this tutorial) and pick both of them with your hook, yarn over, pull through into a loop on the hook, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook.

Step 3: Skip the next stitch (the one that is right behind the overlay stitch) and continue making Knit Stitches through the rest of the row.

The last stitch is made differently. Find the two vertical bars of the last stitch: the ones in the front and the back. Insert hook into both those bars, yarn over and pull through both of the vertical bars on the hook. You can see a detailed explanation of this step in the Tunisian Simple Stitch tutorial.

Reverse Pass (Above the Reverse Stitch)

This is the same as the reverse pass in the Foundation Row.

Chain 1, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Repeat this for all the loops on the hook until you have one loop on the hook.

Forward Pass (Below the Reverse Stitch)

Step 1: Make Knit Stitches until the point where you have to make your Overlay Double Crochet.

Step 2: Locate the Reverse Stitch from three rows back that sits right below the next stitch. Now, yarn over, locate the two sections of the back vertical bar (indicated by the pink arrows in the picture at the beginning of this tutorial) and pick both of them with your hook, yarn over, pull through into a loop on the hook, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook.

Step 3: Skip the next stitch (the one that is right behind the overlay stitch) and continue making Knit Stitches through the rest of the row.

Reverse Pass (Below the Reverse Stitch)

This is the same as the reverse pass in the Foundation Row.

Chain 1, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Repeat this for all the loops on the hook until you have one loop on the hook.

Comparison between the two overlay stitches

The overlay stitch on the left in the image below is made below the Reverse Stitch and hides the Reverse Stitch behind it whereas the overlay stitch on the right is made above the Reverse Stitch and the stitch is clearly visible below the overlay stitch.
