Tutorial – Foundation Single Crochet

Do you always make your foundation row by first making a chain and then making your single crochet stitches on it? I struggle with getting my number of stitches right and with keeping my chain from twisting when I do that. Here is a quick and easy way to make them both in one go!

Video Tutorials

I have right and left handed video tutorials for this stitch on my Youtube channel.

Step 1: Chain 2.

Step 2: Identify the first chain and insert your hook there, yarn over, pull through into a loop on the hook, chain, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook. This will create the first base chain AND the first single crochet stitch of the foundation row.

Step 3: Identify the chain from the previous stitch (indicated by the blue pin below) and insert your hook there as shown in the pictures below. Yarn over, pull through into a loop on the hook, chain (make sure that this is slightly loose), yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook – This will create the second base chain AND the second single crochet stitch of the foundation row.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3 until you reach the desired number of stitches in your foundation row.
