Tunisian Crochet Tutorial – Lattice Stitch

Tunisian crochet lattice stitch - made using a Denise Interchangeable hook and Lily Sugar'n Cream yarn in green.

The Lattice Stitch is a lovely Tunisian crochet stitch made of a two row repeat. It is comprised of Tunisian Simple Stitches and X Stitch and looks beautiful in either a solid color or using multiple colors.

Scroll down for (left and right handed) video tutorials.

The Hook

There are a bunch of different Tunisian crochet hooks available for purchase. You can read about the hooks I use here.

Because of the nature of Tunisian crochet stitches, I recommend using a hook that is at least 2 sizes larger than the recommended hook on the yarn.

Curling

The fabric built with this stitch will curl very little.

Photo Tutorial

This stitch is made up of a two row repeat. It works up very quickly and is made up of Tunisian Simple Stitches and Tunisian X Stitches.

Row 1 – Tunisian Lattice Stitch

Step 1 – Insert hook into the vertical bar of the next 2 stitches, yarn over, pull through 2 loops -> this is a tss decrease.

Tunisian Lattice Stitch Tutorial Step 1.1 - finding the first two vertical bars

Step 2 – Find the first vertical bar of the decrease from the previous step, insert hook into that vertical bar, yarn over, pull through 1 loop.

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 across until there is one stitch remaining (the edge stitch / last stitch)

Step 3: Make the edge stitch by picking the 2 vertical bars of the last stitch of the previous row.

Tunisian Lattice Stitch Tutorial step 3 - completing row 1 forward pass

Step 4: Reverse Pass – ch1, (yo, pull through two loops)* all the way till the end of the row

Tunisian Lattice Stitch Tutorial step 4 - reverse pass of row 1

Row 2 – Tunisian Lattice Stitch

The X stitches are staggered so we start and end with a Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss).

Step 1: tss in the next stitch.

Step 2: Insert hook into the vertical bar of the next 2 stitches, yarn over, pull through 2 loops -> this is a tss decrease

Step 3: Find the first vertical bar of the decrease from the previous step, insert hook into that vertical bar, yarn over, pull through 1 loop. (Same as Step 2 in previous row)

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 across until there are two stitches remaining (the edge stitch / last stitch and the one before that)
