A very close friend of mine recently told me that they were going to have a baby! I was super excited for them and decided to make a baby blanket for their new arrival. The Bernat Baby Velvet yarn was perfect for this project and it made the coziest baby blanket that I was aiming for!
While I made this with velvet yarn, this pattern will work with any kind of yarn with an appropriate hook.

What you will need
- Yarn: Aran/Worsted weight yarn
- I used Bernat Baby Velvet yarn in color Little Boy Blue: 24 oz / 680 g / 1000 m / 1100 yards (3 skeins)
- Note: You might end up needing more or less yarn than me depending on your gauge and which bobbles you decide to make (hdc or dc bobbles – see Pattern Notes section).
- Hook: 6.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle to weave in tails

Gauge
7 rows of 10 Tunisian Simple Stitches is a 2.75 inch (7 cms) square.
You do not have to match my gauge exactly. Depending on your crochet style and tension, the size of your project will be different.
If your swatch is smaller than mine, you can use a larger hook. If your swatch is larger than mine, you can use a smaller hook but you need to make sure that your hook is large enough to avoid curling. It is possible to fix some curling after the project is complete but it is best to use a hook that is at least 2 sizes larger than the recommended crochet hook for the yarn.

Pattern notes
- This pattern is written in US terms.
- You can use the chart OR the written instructions to make this blanket.
- I usually start from the bottom right corner of the pattern chart and work my way up. When you use the chart and the written instructions together, they will match up in that direction.
- TIP: I recommend using different bobble stitches for different yarns:
- If you are using Velvet yarn, DC bobbles when made in the back loop work best because of the texture of the yarn. I have noticed that the HDC bobbles don’t hold up very well with this yarn because it is very slippery.
- If you are using non-velvet worsted / aran weight yarn, then HDC bobbles made knit-wise work well.

- In this chart, I have used two colors to indicate two different stitches. You will not have to switch colors at any point while making the blanket.

How to read pattern repeats
(…) * 2 times – Repeat the instruction in the brackets twice.
e.g. (bob, 9 tss) * 2 times = (bob, 9 tss), (bob, 9 tss)
2 tss – Make tss stitches in the next 2 stitches = tss in next stitch, tss in next stitch

- The return pass for every row is the same. For this reason, you will not find instructions for it along with the forward pass instructions.
