Welcome back to the Guest Blogger series on KnitterKnotter! Here, you will find free patterns shared by some very talented bloggers from around the world!
I have been designing patterns for about two years now and I have never designed a hat! This one is the first hat pattern on my blog and I am so excited to share it with you 🙂 The Golden Winter Cap is designed by Ratna from Srishti Designs and you can check out her other patterns in her Ravelry and LoveCrafts stores and you can also follow her on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.

Meet the designer
Hi, I am Ratna, a person in love with life; more so being a cancer survivor. I have always been fascinated and attracted by colors, shapes & patterns in everyday life, be it in the midst of nature, or shopping for fruits and vegetables in the local market. I have been interested in all sorts of arts and crafts since childhood and tried my hand at many things such as drawing , painting, embroidery, stitching, etc. Though Origami was very interesting and challenging, I couldn’t really get the satisfaction of creating something of my own. After starting to crochet a few years back, I finally found my calling. I started with crocheting random patterns from my imagination which then led to getting interested in writing patterns.
Inspiration for the pattern
For this pattern my inspiration was the king of fruits – the Alphonso mango. My thought process went like this:
What I love about Summers -> Mango of course -> which represents warmth -> Motif / Paisley -> a design using it, something that provides warmth during cold winters -> Yessss!!! A Cowl -> less yarn on hand due to lockdown -> Better option a Cap!
About the pattern and the yarn
The Golden Winter Cap is made using the Mosaic crochet technique and comes in 2 sizes. I used Red Heart With Love Metallic Yarn, 1 ball each of Red and Blue to make 2 caps, 1 of each size. You could use any Aran weight yarn for this project.

Gauge
FSC 36, CH 1, SC in same CH and in each of the next 35 CH around. Join to BLO of 1st SC with SLST. Work in BLO of all stitches and place marker in the first SC of every round. CH1, SC in same stitch. SC in all stitches around. Work in continuous rounds without SLST, for 3 more rounds.
Lay the piece flat and measure.
12 stitches = 3.5”
6 rounds of BLO SC = 1.75”
Pattern Notes
- The pattern is written in US terms.
- The 1st Column of the written pattern mentions the Round number and the Color to be used for that Round.
- Pattern Repeats in a round are marked with ** and Round Brackets ( ) in the 2nd Column mention the number of stitches or repeats of the pattern for each size.
- Example:
FSC (60, 72) means 60 FSC for Small Size and 72 FSC for Medium Size
* *(5,6) times means- Repeat instructions between the **, 5 times for Small Size and 6 times Medium Size
- Example:
- The pattern is made in continuous rounds. Hence no SLST at the end of each round and no CH at beginning of round, unless otherwise specified.
- Change color at the last YO of the last stitch of each round. For this, the last stitch of the round will be worked in the following manner:
IF LAST STITCH OF THE ROUND IS SC: INSERT HOOK IN BLO, YARN OVER AND PULL UP LOOP (2 loops on hook now), YARN OVER WITH OTHER COLOR AND PULL THROUGH BOTH LOOPS.
IF LAST STITCH OF THE ROUND IS DC: YO, INSERT HOOK IN BLO, YARN OVER AND PULL UP LOOP (3 loops on hook now), YARN OVER AND PULL THROUGH 2 LOOPS, YARN OVER WITH OTHER COLOR AND PULL THROUGH REMAINING 2 LOOPS. - Left and right handed instructions are different for this pattern. Make sure you are at the right section while working on this pattern.
- When changing colors, DO NOT cut thread or carry it along. Leave it there for use in the next round. All DC’s are made in Front Loop of stitches of same color, 2 rows below and all SC’s are made in Back Loop of stitches previous row.
- In Fig 1 below, the white arrow shows the stitch, 2 rows below where DC will be made, which is right below the stitch marked with a Yellow arrow. The next SC will be made in the next stitch (marked with a red arrow) of the previous row.
