How to add X’s to a Tunisian Mosaic Crochet Chart

There are two types of Overlay Mosaic Crochet charts that you will come across:

  1. Charts with no symbols to indicate any stitches.
  2. Charts with X’s indicating the overlay stitches.

Note: Inset Mosaic Crochet charts are different and are not covered in this post.

If you like a mosaic pattern and you find the chart for it but it doesn’t have any stitch indicators on it, it is really easy to add them on it. There are only 2 rules you need to follow. I will explain them with a photo tutorial and a video tutorial in this post (scroll down for the video tutorial).

Types of Overlay Tunisian Mosaic Crochet Charts

The same pattern can be represented in a chart in two different ways. The example used below is a 5 stitch Apache Tears pattern. The first chart is a plain chart with no stitch indicators while the second one has X’s that represent Front Post Extended Simple Stitches.

If you are new to this style of crocheting, you can read about the stitches used in Tunisian Mosaic Crochet on my blog.

I also offer a beginner friendly course that can help you learn Tunisian Mosaic crochet in small, easy steps!

I also have some videos on my ad-supported YouTube channel that can help you get started!

Rules to add X’s to a mosaic crochet chart

Below is an Overlay Tunisian Mosaic crochet chart where the black and white squares at the left and right side of each row indicate that only one color will be used for every row. The black squares correspond to the grey color squares in the pattern.

Before we discuss the rules, let’s look at the two different kinds of squares that we will come across in a mosaic pattern:

  1. A square that IS NOT of the same color as the color of the row – indicated by a yellow arrow.
  2. A square that IS of the same color as the color of the row – indicated by the blue and green arrows.
A Tunisian Mosaic Crochet Chart - Apache Tears - highlighting the different kinds of squares in a chart

Rule #1

Ignore the squares that are not the same color as the color of the current row.

The square indicated by the yellow arrow is a white square in a black row so we will ignore it.

We will apply this rule to all the rows in the pattern.
– All white squares in black rows will be ignored.
– All black squares in white rows will be ignored.

Rule #2

For the squares that are the same color as the color of the current row, mark them with an ‘X’ if the square right under them is also the same color as the current row.

The square indicated by the blue arrow is a grey square in a black row but the square right under it is not of the same color so we will ignore it.

We will apply this rule to all the rows in the pattern.
– All white squares in white rows that DO NOT have a white square right under them will be ignored.
– All grey squares in black rows that DO NOT have a grey square right under them will be ignored.

The square indicated by the green arrow is a grey square in a black row and the square right under it is of the same color so we will mark it with an ‘X’.

We will apply this rule to all the rows in the pattern.
– All white squares in white rows that have a white square right under them will be marked with an ‘X’.
– All grey squares in black rows that have a grey square right under them will be marked with an ‘X’.

That’s all, it is really easy to add X’s to a chart you’d like to use!
