Join Me – Easy Tunisian Mittens – Free Pattern!!

I have met so many people who want to try Tunisian crochet but are either intimidated by it or think that they would have to invest in a new set of hooks to try it. When I heard about the Easy TC Blog Hop hosted by Noor, I was very excited about it because it required us to design a Tunisian pattern that could be made with a regular crochet hook! This was perfect because it would give everyone who wants to try Tunisian crochet a set of patterns that they could make using their regular crochet hooks without having to worry about investing in new hooks before they started 🙂

What you will need 

1. Yarn: Worsted weight yarn – 2 oz / 60 gms / 100 yards / 90 m – I used Lily Sugar’n Cream in colors Moondance and White – (1 skein each)
2. Hook: 6 mm (J-10) crochet hook 
3. Scissors
4. Measuring Tape
5. Tapestry needle to weave in tails

4 rows of 5 Tunisian Simple stitches is a 1.25 inch (3.2 cms) square

Sizing and Adjustments

The pattern is written up for adult size Small/Medium and has the following dimensions:
Length – 8” (20 cms)
Circumference – 7” (18 cms)

To make sure that this size is right for you, measure the circumference around your hand at the widest part. The width of your panel should be approximately 0.5” (1.25 cms) less than the circumference of your hand. This is because the mitten fabric will most likely stretch a little and will be a comfortable fit when it is slightly smaller than the circumference of your hand.

If the size does not work for you, here is how you can adjust it:
To adjust length: add / remove rows of stitches until you have reached the desired length.
To adjust circumference: add / remove stitches to the last panel as needed OR you could skip / add another panel too.

Note: You could also go up / down a hook size to adjust the overall size of the mitten without modifying the pattern.

Pattern notes

1. This pattern is written in US terms.
2. This pattern will be a great stash buster. You can make all your panels in different colors!
3. You do not need a Tunisian crochet hook to make these mittens!! This pattern is for anyone who wants to try Tunisian crochet without having to invest in additional hooks.
4. This pattern is made in panels that are joined using the join-as-you-go method to make a rectangle. That rectangle is then seamed at one edge to make the mitten.
5. The instructions are written for the adult size Small / Medium. Refer to the ‘Sizing and Adjustments’ section above for size.
6. The return pass is the same for all rows: 

• ch 1, (yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) across until one loop remains on hook.

C1: Moondance
C2: White

Instructions

Notes:

1. If you need to adjust the length of your  mitten, measure the length of Panel 1 after you make it. If this is shorter / longer than you’d like, you can adjust the length before you start making the next panel.
2. All the panels will have the same number of rows as the first one. So, if you made an adjustment, remember to accomodate for the adjustment while making the remaining panels.
3. The instructions for the FOUNDATION and JOINING panels are mentioned after the mitten pattern.

Mitten (Make 2)

Panel 1: With C1, make the FOUNDATION Panel.
Panel 2: With C2, make a JOINING Panel by joining as you go with Panel 1.
Panel 3: With C1, make a JOINING Panel by joining as you go with Panel 2.
Panel 4: With C2, make a JOINING Panel by joining as you go with Panel 3.
Panel 5: With C1, make a JOINING Panel by joining as you go with Panel 4.
Panel 6: With C2, make a JOINING Panel by joining as you go with Panel 5.
Panel 7: With C1, make a JOINING Panel by joining as you go with Panel 6.

Adjust width and finish the mitten

At this point, check the fit of the mitten by joining the edges of the panels 1 and 7 with temporary pins or stitch markers and wear the mitten. If it is not comfortable, adjust the width of the mitten (See SIZING AND ADJUSTMENTS section).

When you have a comfortable fit, fold the mitten with its WS facing outside and seam the edges together by joining between points A & B and points C & D – leaving about 2 inches between points B & C. Make sure you reinforce the start and end of the thumb opening (points B & C) by sewing through the stitches multiple times. 

Optional Border

To finish the mitten, make a row of single crochet stitches at the top and bottom edges of the mitten. Start with attaching yarn at any point and make 4 single crochet stitches per panel. Once you have made the stitches all around, join with the first single crochet stitch with a slip stitch. 

Foundation Panel

Foundation Row: Chain 5. Make the foundation row stitches in the back loops of the chain.

Rows 1 – 25: fs, tss in the next 3 stitches, ls.  Note: You will have 5 loops on your hook at the end of the forward pass.

Last Row: Repeat Row 1 (Bind off). Cut yarn and weave in ends. This row is the same as other rows except that you will make a slip stitch every time you pick up a loop on your hook. There will be no reverse pass for this row.

Joining Panel (This will be made by joining as you go with an adjacent panel)

Foundation Row: Join yarn with the first stitch of the adjacent panel, chain 4. Make the foundation row stitches in the back loops of the chain and make the 5th stitch by joining with the first row of the adjacent panel. If you need help with the ‘Join as you go’ technique, you can find a tutorial in the RESOURCES section.

Rows 1 – 25: fs, tss in the next three stitches, join with the next row in the adjacent panel. Note: You will have 5 loops on your hook at the end of the forward pass.

Last Row: Repeat Row 1 (Bind off). Join with the adjacent panel with a slip stitch. Cut yarn and weave in ends. This row is the same as other rows except that you will make a slip stitch every time you pick up a loop on your hook. There will be no reverse pass for this row.
