Luxury Plaid Tunisian Poncho – Free Pattern!

This poncho is made with the C2C Entrelac technique using Tunisian crochet. It also has a faux fur trim to give it a luxurious feel and look!I had been looking at all the beautiful plaid garments that people were wearing in winter and I wanted one for myself too! But, since I was pregnant, and since I wanted something that I could wear even after my baby was born, I decided to make this poncho. I wasn’t able to wear it too many times because my baby decided to come early so I am waiting for next winter now!!

This poncho is made with the C2C Entrelac technique using Tunisian crochet. It also has a faux fur trim to give it a luxurious feel and look!

The yarn

The Caron Simply Soft yarn is very easy to work with. It is very soft and not too heavy which made it great to make this poncho!

The Lion Brand Go For Faux yarn is perfect for the trim. It finishes up the poncho nicely and gives it a very luxurious look and feel!

What you will need (with clickable affiliate links)

1. Yarn: Medium weight / Worsted weight / CYC4 yarn and Faux Fur yarn. I used:
   • Caron Simply Soft yarn in colors:  Black – 10 oz / 300 g / 550 yards / 500 m (2 skeins), White – 8 oz / 225 g / 425 yards / 400 m (2 skeins), Grey Heather – 18 oz / 500 g / 900 y / 800 m (4 skeins)
   • Lion Brand Go For Faux yarn in color Black Panther – 8 yards / 7 m (1 skein)
2. Hook: 8 mm Tunisian crochet hook
3. Scissors
4. Tapestry needle to weave in tails
5. Stitch markers (optional)

Sizing

One size: Approximately 30” (76 cms) length at center back x 42” (106 cms) wide

The pattern is written for one size but is easily adjustable. See Adjustments section below.

Gauge

5 rows of 7 Tunisian Simple stitches is a 2 inch square.

Adjustments

To adjust length: add / remove equal number of rows in the front and back panels. 
To adjust width: add / remove equal number of columns on each side.

Instructions

1. I strongly recommend viewing this ‘follow along’ video tutorial before you start making the Poncho. It covers all the basics of making this poncho and it has some very useful tips too (it shows how the yarn can be carried in the back for diagonals with alternating colors so you won’t have a million ends to weave in)!
2. This pattern is made using the C2C entrelac technique. Start at the bottom right corner and work your way up in diagonals (making squares of 9 rows of 12 Simple Stitches) until you reach the top left corner. See the Resources section for a detailed video to follow along.
3. The types of squares are mentioned as T1, T2, T3 and T4. The instructions for each square type are mentioned in the C2C Entrelac tutorial.
4. The blue lines indicate the edges of the poncho. The blue line in the front section divides the front panel into two.
5. Because the blue line divides one column of front squares into two halves, the number of stitches are different in the halved squares from the rest.
   • All squares divided by the blue line in the front panel are split into two rectangles made up of 9 rows of 6 Tunisian Simple Stitches. 
   • All other squares are made up of 9 rows of 12 Tunisian Simple Stitches.
6. After you have made the poncho, attach the faux fur yarn at any corner of the poncho. Sew the faux fur yarn along the entire edge of the poncho for a luxurious feel!
   • If you would rather crochet than sew the faux fur yarn, you could make a row of (sc, ch1)* across the border in black color and then crochet the faux fur yarn with a larger hook by inserting your hook into the chain spaces.
