Madhu Blanket – Tunisian Crochet Pattern

The Madhu Blanket is one of those projects that was just as enjoyable to design as it was to make. This intermediate level Tunisian crochet lap blanket is full of texture, built around a beautiful honeycomb design that gives it a really rich, satisfying look. Every stitch adds to the overall effect, and the result is a blanket that feels just as good as it looks.

It’s a great choice if you’re ready to push your skills a little and take on something with a bit more depth — the kind of make that keeps you engaged from start to finish and leaves you with a real sense of accomplishment when you’re done. And if you have yarn scraps sitting around waiting for the right project, this is a fantastic way to put them to good use. Dig into that stash and get started!

Worksheet!!

This pattern started with nothing more than an idea, and before picking up my hook I needed a way to visualize how it would actually look. So I put together a reference image on my computer and used it as a guide throughout the design process. It turned out to be so helpful that I decided to turn it into a downloadable worksheet for you to use too! Just keep in mind that the worksheet doesn’t include accurate stitch counts — it’s simply a tool to help you visualize your color choices before you get started.

Technique and difficulty

This is an intermediate level Tunisian crochet pattern. If you are an ambitious beginner, this is for you too.

Size

34″ (86 cms) x 44″ (112 cms)

The blanket is made up of 2 sections: the honeycomb section in the center and the border. The border is made in four parts and is made directly on the honeycomb section and NOT joined later. For this reason the pattern calls for a specific gauge and will work up in only one size.

What you will need (with clickable affiliate links)

  • Yarn: You will need Aran weight yarn in 4 colors.
    • I used Scheepjes Cahlista yarn:
      • Rosewood: 3.6 oz / 100 g / 170 m / 185 yards (2 skeins)
      • DarkTeal: 11oz / 300g / 510m / 560yards (6 skeins)
      • Saffron: 12.5 oz / 350 g / 595 m / 650 yards (7 skeins)
      • Mercury: 18 oz /500 g / 850 m / 930 yards (10 skeins)
  • Hook: I used a 6.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook. You might need to go up / down a size to obtain correct gauge.
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle to weave in tails

While I made this using 4 solid colors, I think this blanket will be great with gradient yarn or even as a stash-busting project!
