Maya Hexagon Cardigan – Free Pattern!

I am thrilled to share my new pattern with you! I have always admired those classic granny stitch hexagon cardigans that seem to be everywhere. Drawing inspiration from them, I took a dive into creating my own Tunisian crochet hexagon cardigan. If you’re new to this, you’ll be surprised—it’s made from just two hexagons!

One of the highlights of this design is the seamless join achieved by grafting Tunisian knit stitches. This cardigan also marks a personal milestone as my very first cardigan design. If you’re familiar with working in the round, you’ll find this cardigan a breeze to make.

You might recognize the colors from my Three Little Kittens Blanket. This cardigan turned out to be a happy accident because I wanted to use up the leftover yarn from the blanket—I had ordered a lot! I love how it turned out, and it has quickly become one of my favorite pieces. I’ve worn it a few times, and I’ve received so many compliments. Now, all my friends want me to make one for them too!

You can plan your colors or use up your scraps—this pattern will look great no matter what you choose!

Tunisian-In-The-Round

Tunisian-in-the-round involves working in a continuous spiral with a double-ended hook, using one color for the forward pass and another for the return pass. If you’re new to this technique, I have a course that explains it in detail.

Note: The two patterns included in the course will be shared as free patterns on my ad-supported blog after June ’24.

What you will need (with clickable affiliate links)

  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in at least two colors.
    • I used KnitPicks Brava Worsted yarn in colors Black, Sienna, Cream, Brindle, and Almond. The pictured cardigan is made using 5 colors. See the Sizing section for yardage. Use coupon CARDICAL to get a 20% discount valid until 8/20/24.
  • Hook: A double ended Tunisian crochet hook that meets gauge. Use coupon KKCALDENISE15% to get a 15% discount.
    • I built a double ended hook using the following two hook sizes:
      • 8 mm (L – 11) for the forward pass.
      • 6.5 mm (K – 10.5) for the return pass.
    • If you’re planning to add the bottom extension to this pattern, you will also need an 8 mm (L-11) hook with a cable since that part is worked flat.
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Tape
  • Tapestry needle to weave in tails
  • 6 Stitch markers
  • Yarn bowl (optional)

Experience Level

Intermediate – This pattern assumes you are familiar with the basics of starting and finishing a Tunisian crochet project, as well as working in the round.

Size

This pattern is written for the smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. Please see the sizing chart below before you choose your size – XS (S/M, L/XL, 2X/3X, 4X/5X).

This pattern is designed for a more fitted look, not an oversized fit. Please refer to the picture to see the intended fit. If you prefer an oversized fit, simply go up one size. This will give you the extra room you’re looking for while maintaining the style of the design.

The yarn quantities provided are approximate. Should you opt for a different size or if there are variations in your yarn, hook size, crochet technique, or gauge, the amount of yarn you require could be more or less than specified below.

Gauge

Construction

This cardigan comes together in five steps, with the last one being optional.

Step 1: Make two hexagons
Step 2: Add sleeves – Fold the hexagons to create the shape, then add the sleeves.

Step 3: Seam the shoulders and the back.
Step 4: Crochet a border around the joined hexagons.
Step 5: Extend the bottom.

Pattern Notes

  1. This pattern is written in English / US terms.
  2. It’s important to note that the hexagons will not lie flat. This isn’t a mistake; it’s part of the design. This characteristic allows them to fold into the ‘L’ shape, forming the two sides of the cardigan.
  3. Here’s how the construction breaks down:
    1. The hexagons, sleeves, and border (steps 1, 2, and 4) are worked in a round, following a continuous spiral.
    2. Step 5 is worked flat.
  4. The specific instructions for the forward and return passes are not included in the written instructions, as they are detailed separately in the document above.

STEP 5 – Bottom extension

This part is worked flat and does not require a double ended hook. You will need a hook with a cord and a stopper instead. This section adds approximately 7.5 cm / 3″ of length. To add or subtract length, increase or decrease rows in section “Rows 2-7”.

Repeat Row 9. This is the bind off row. You will make a slip stitch every time you pick up a loop on your hook. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Blocking

Before wearing your cardigan, I highly recommend blocking the border and bottom extension to prevent any curling. If you’d like, you can block other parts of the cardigan as well. This process might loosen the stitches and make your cardigan slightly larger. For my own cardigan, I chose to steam block it since I used acrylic yarn and lightly blocked all sections.

Hi, Arunima, This is a beautiful sweater. I've been crocheting for over 40 years. I've used Tunisian crochet here and there, including an afghan for my best friend.

I wanted to make a hexagon sweater. But with the weather going into fall, I wanted something a bit more substantial. I was looking for a pattern, and had given up. I couldn't even find a paid pattern. So I started using ai to figure how to make a solid hexagon. Through, I found your website then this pattern. I've printed off the pattern and now am trying to figure out color placement. I can't wait to try this!

I can't get it to pin. I have never had this problem before. I don't quite understand the problem. Any help would be appreciated.
