Tunisian crochet tutorial – Double Crochet (tdc)

Have you tried making the double crochet stitch using Tunisian crochet? It is a beautiful stitch that can be used to make some really pretty patterns.

Here is the front and back of a Tunisian Double Crochet swatch.

The hook

There are a bunch of different Tunisian crochet hooks available for purchase. You can read about the hooks I use here. Because of the nature of Tunisian crochet stitches, I recommend using a hook that is at least 2 sizes larger than the recommended hook on the yarn.

Curling

The fabric built with this stitch should not curl.

Video Tutorials

I have right and left handed video tutorials for this stitch on my Youtube channel. You can find all my Tunisian crochet video tutorials here.

Photo Tutorial

The foundation row is made slightly differently with this stitch as compared to other Tunisian crochet stitches. The photo tutorial will walk you through two rows of making double crochet stitches – the foundation row and a regular double crochet row.

Forward pass (Foundation Row)

Step 1: Make a chain. The number of chain stitches should be one more than the number of double crochet stitches you want in the row. e.g. If you want 5 stitches, make 6 chain stitches.

Step 2: Find the third chain from the hook and make a double crochet stitch there: yarn over, insert your hook into the back vertical bar of that stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook – you will now have two loops on your hook.

I like to make my foundation row in the back loops of the chain. There are other ways of making the foundation row and you can find more about it in the Foundation Row tutorial on my blog.

Step 3: Identify the back loops of the chain stitches all the way to the end of the row and make a double crochet stitch into each one of them.

Reverse Pass (Foundation Row)

This is the same as the reverse pass in the Foundation Row: Chain 1, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Repeat this for all the loops on the hook until you have one loop on the hook.

Forward pass (Regular Row)

Step 1: Chain 1.

Step 2: Identify the vertical bar of the next stitch. Yarn over, insert the hook into that vertical bar, yarn over and pull through into a loop on the hook, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook.

Step 3: Identify the vertical bars of all stitches all the way to the end of the row. Do this for all the stitches except for the last one: Yarn over, insert the hook into the next vertical bar, yarn over and pull through into a loop on the hook, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook.

Step 4: To make the last stitch, find the two vertical bars of the last stitch of the previous row (indicated by the pink pin in the picture below): the ones in the front and the back. Yarn over, insert hook into both those bars, yarn over and pull through both the vertical bars on the hook, yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook.

Reverse Pass

This is the same as the reverse pass in the Foundation Row: Chain 1, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Repeat this for all the loops on the hook until you have one loop on the hook.
