Rainbow Shawlette – Free Pattern!

This shawlette came to life on one of my yarn shopping trips when I stumbled across the most beautiful skein — Shawl in a Ball in Restful Rainbow by Lion Brand Yarns. I couldn’t resist picking it up and spent some time playing around with different stitches before deciding to design a simple, one skein lacy pattern that would really let those gorgeous colors shine.

I actually started out with a full triangle shawl in mind, but about halfway through I realized one skein wasn’t going to be enough for an adult sized shawl — so I adapted it into a shawlette instead. And honestly? I think it turned out even better than my original idea!

The colors in this yarn are just so beautiful that I can’t stop looking at it. I wear this shawlette all the time while I’m crocheting — it’s warm, cozy, and it brightens up the whole room just by being there! 😊

The pattern itself is wonderfully simple — it’s made up of just one stitch (double crochet), so once you get the hang of the repeat, it works up really smoothly. While I designed it with this colorful yarn in mind, it looks equally gorgeous in a solid color too — one of my testers made it that way and it turned out absolutely beautiful. So whatever yarn you choose, I think you’re going to love it!

Dimensions

Chart to show the dimensions of the Rainbow Shawlette by KnitterKnotter

Gauge

Gauge is not important in this shawlette. After 5 rows, I had a triangle that measured (2.3” / 6 cms) x (2.3” / 6 cms) x (2” / 5 cms).

Please keep in mind that everyone’s style of crocheting varies and because of that variation, you might need more or less yarn. I used the entire skein of the ‘Shawl in a Ball’ yarn and had just a few inches remaining in the end. If you use my pattern as it is, your gauge must match mine exactly. To be on the safe side, you could do one of two things:

  • Buy two skeins OR
  • Make Part B (See PATTERN ASSEMBLY below) a couple of rows shorter than mine to make sure you will have enough yarn to complete the shawlette.

Abbreviations

You can find my stitch guide with all the abbreviations here.

Pattern assembly

The pattern has 3 sections – Part A, Part B and Part C. My shawlette has the following number of rows:
Part A – 38 rows
Part B – 34 rows
Part C – 38 rows

Adjustments

It is possible to modify the shape and size of the pattern by adding / removing rows in either section. You could also eliminate Part B completely to make a triangle shawl instead.

If you choose to add / remove rows, the amount of yarn needed will change.

Pattern notes

  1. This pattern is written in US terms.
  2. In Part C, make the chains of the beginning dc a little loose as compared to your Part A chains.
  3. If you are a beginner and are not comfortable with aligning the different parts of the chart together, it will be best to follow the written instructions while reading the charts.
  4. When the pattern calls for working the next stitch in the last dc, which was a ch3 in the previous row, work the stitch in the 3rd chain.
  5. The number of stitches at the end of every row are mentioned in brackets at the end of each row.
    • dcinc counts as 2 sts
    • dcdec counts as 1 st
    • the first 3 chain sts in a row count as 1 st
    • every other ch st counts as 1 st each

Pattern repetitions

rep1: dcinc in dc, dc in the next two dc, dcdec next dc and next dcdec, ch2, dc in next dc (or 2nd ch if previous round has ch4-sp), ch2 [5 dc, 1 dcdec, 2 ch2-sp = 10 sts]

Notes:

  1. In rep1, replace the first dcinc with dcinc-beg if a row starts with rep1

Pin it and make it later!
