The Zuri Blanket is a beautiful project that combines the art of Tunisian Crochet with the timeless appeal of mosaic design, resulting in a blanket that is as enjoyable to make as it is to display. Each square introduces a new mosaic design, making this a wonderful way to build your skills and confidence with the technique one square at a time.
The blanket is made up of individual squares that are joined together at the end, giving you the flexibility to work at your own pace and take breaks between squares without losing momentum. Each square is a small project in its own right, and the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel as your collection of squares grows is truly rewarding.
Whether you’re already familiar with Tunisian Mosaic Crochet or have recently discovered the technique and are looking to practice and expand your skills, the Zuri Blanket is a wonderful project to have on your hook. With 25 unique mosaic designs to work through, no two squares are the same — keeping the process fresh, engaging, and enjoyable from the very first square to the last.
Fun Fact: The name ‘Zuri’ mean ‘beautiful’ in Hindi
This blanket pattern was originally hosted as a CAL in 2023.
The CAL-specific information has since been removed from this page,
leaving just the free pattern for easy reference and readability.

Why Tunisian Mosaic Crochet?
Mosaic crochet is a beautiful technique, and if you’ve ever wondered whether Tunisian crochet is a good match for it — it absolutely is! Here are 3 reasons why the two go so perfectly together:
- It is a beautiful yet simple technique. You only work with two stitches and you can create some very intricate patterns with it!
- There are no color changes in the middle of a row. All the color-work magic happens through the stitches only.
- We don’t have a million ends to weave in or create an envelope border! Since Tunisian crochet is worked on one side only — there’s no turning the project after each row — the number of ends to weave in is kept to a minimum. For each square, I had just 4 ends to weave in, plus 2 ends per row for the border. That’s it!

Technique and Difficulty
Squares – Beginner
The squares in this blanket are beginner friendly. There are only two stitches you need to know.
Border – Intermediate
The border in this blanket will be worked in a round. If you are not comfortable with working in a round, you can skip the mosaic border and make any border of your choice.
If you new to Tunisian Mosaic Crochet, you can get a head start by practicing the stitches mentioned here and learning how to change color at the beginning of a Forward Pass before starting this CAL.
Size
The size of the squares will depend on the yarn you picked. The measurements here are based on the gauge mentioned in the pattern. Each square measures 10” (25.5 cms).
There are multiple possibilities of putting these squares together:
- 6 squares x 4 squares – makes a 5’ x 3.5’ afghan or throw
- 5 squares x 5 squares – makes a 4’ x 4’ blanket
- Use them individually as dish cloths
- Add more squares to make a larger blanket
A border is added to the blanket after the squares are joined. You can choose to add a border or skip it, keep in mind that adding a border will increase the size of the blanket. The mosaic border is 3.25” (8 cms) wide and the size of the blanket is 4.75’ x 4.75’.
Gauge
8 rows of 8 stitches is a 2” square.
Use the following pattern to make the gauge swatch:
Row 1 (FR): Chain 8, make the foundation row stitches in the back loops of the chain.
Row 2: fs, 6 tss, ls.
Row 3: fs, 2 tss, etss, 3 tss, ls.
Row 4: fs, 3 tss, etss, 2 tss, ls.
Row 5: fs, 4 tss, etss, tss, ls.
Row 6: fs, etss, 4 tss, etss, ls.
Row 7: fs, tss, etss, 4 tss, ls.
Row 8: fs, 2 tss, etss, 3 tss, ls.
BOR: fs, 6 tss, ls.
This will be the bind off row. You will make a slip stitch every time you pick up a loop on your hook. Fasten off and weave in ends.
If your gauge swatch is smaller, go up a hook size. If it is larger, you can try going down a hook size but be sure to use a hook that is at least 2 sizes larger than the one recommended for the yarn you are using – this is to avoid curling.
Abbreviations
- ch – chain
- fs – First Stitch – Skip the first vertical bar of the previous row (the one right under the one on the hook). The loop on the hook will count as the first stitch for every row.
- ls – Last Stitch – Pick up the two vertical bars of the last stitch of the previous row, yarn over, pull through both the vertical bars into a loop on the hook.
- tss – Tunisian Simple Stitch– Insert hook in the vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.
- etss – Front Post Extended Tunisian Simple Stitch – Locate the stitch that’s two rows below the next stitch. Pick up the two vertical bars (front and back bars) from above the return pass chain, yarn over, pull through, chain 1.
- twtks – Twisted Tunisian Knit Stitch – Insert hook in between the 2 vertical bars in the opposite direction, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.
- twtss – Twisted Tunisian Simple Stitch (twisted upwards) – Insert hook in the vertical bar in the opposite direction, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.
- twtss-twtks – Twisted Tunisian Simple Stitch and Twisted Tunisian Knit Stitch in the same stitch
- tks-tss – Tunisian Knit Stitch and Tunisian Simple Stitch in the same stitch.
- yo – yarn over
- FR – Foundation Row
- BOR – Bind off Row
What you will need (with clickable affiliate links)
Yarn
Any yarn will work beautifully for this blanket — just make sure to choose at least two contrasting colors to really make the pattern stand out. The yardage listed below includes approximately 1000 yards for an 11 row border. I made mine using Stylecraft Special DK in the following colors:
- Silver – 2250 yards / 2000 m / 24 oz / 700 gm (7 skeins)
- White – 1600 yds / 1475 m / 17 oz / 500 gm (5 skeins)
This is a great pattern to use up your scraps too! You could purchase the base color (C1) and use yarn from your stash as the other color (C2) for different squares.
My mosaic border is 3.25” (8 cms) wide and the size of my blanket is 4.75’ x 4.75’.
Hook
I used my Denise2Go 2 hook set to make my blanket. I recommend picking a hook that is compatible with the yarn you chose. I usually make a gauge swatch with a few different hooks before I pick one. The gauge swatch will give you a good idea of how the fabric will work up and if you would like it to be more or less drapey. I used a 6 mm (J-10) Tunisian crochet hook for making my squares and the border. I used a 5.5 mm (I-9) crochet hook to join the squares.
For making the border, I used a double ended hook – 6 mm (J-10) hook for the forward pass and 5.5 mm (I-9) hook for the reverse pass. I built my double ended hook by joining two hooks with a cable from my Denise interchangeable crochet hook set.
Blocking Supplies
A blocking mat, blocking pins and a steamer (because I worked with acrylic yarn).

Joining Instructions
I joined my squares using the Single Crochet Join method. I have included a tip in the videos below that will help you hide the color transitions at the edges if they are still visible after you join your squares.
Mosaic Border
Video Tutorial
There is a support video that explains how to make a Tunisian Mosaic crochet border. The border used in the video is not exactly the same as the one in this blanket but you will be able to make the blanket border after watching this video since I have included all the important details and all my tips. You can also check out my blog post for Mastering Tunisian Mosaic Crochet Borders for the written instructions and chart of the pattern used in the video tutorial.
Colors
CA: Silver
CB: White
Notes
- The border is worked in a round.
- Some rounds follow a spiral pattern, while in others, you’ll need to cut and reattach the yarn after each round. I recommend watching the video tutorial before beginning your border.
- To work this mosaic crochet border, you will need a double ended Tunisian crochet hook. I constructed a double ended hook by joining two hooks from my Denise Interchangeable Hook set with a short cord. I’ve used a 6 mm hook for my forward pass and a 5.5 mm hook for my reverse pass.
- Each round will require two strands of yarn of the same color – strand A for the forward pass and strand B for the return pass.
- Forward pass – With the right side facing you, pick up loops using strand A on one end of the hook. Use this strand to crochet your tss and etss stitches.
- Return pass – With the wrong side facing you, use strand B at the other end of the hook to work loops off.
- When starting a new round with a fresh strand of yarn, pull strand B through just one loop at the round’s beginning. Continue by yarning over and pulling through 2 loops until only 3 or 4 loops remain on the hook.
- When working in a spiral, continue yarning over and pulling through 2 loops until just 3 or 4 loops remain on your hook.
- The written instructions for the border pattern don’t include directions for the return pass.
- Turn your work each time you want to pick up or close loops.
- Prior to changing color, follow the Return Pass instructions, working loops off the hook until only one loop left on the hook, and then cut the yarn.
- TIP: Weaving in ends can be a bit challenging. I recommend viewing the video tutorial before you start.
- How to read the chart:
- Symbols and numbers on the chart:
- Stitch numbers are NOT mentioned in the chart.
- The black and white rectangles seen at the corners aren’t included in the pattern. Instead, they signify that a single color is used throughout the round and display the round numbers for the border.
- Round 1 serves as the Foundation Round, where stitches are picked up from the core fabric formed by joining the squares.
- The red squares indicate the starting point for left and right handed crocheters.
- Right handed crocheters –
- Start at the stitch next to the edge stitch at the top right corner (indicated by a red square).
- Left handed crocheters –
- Start at the stitch next to the edge stitch at the top left corner (indicated by a red square).
- The symbols C1 and C2 will be flipped.
- Right handed crocheters –
- The Bind Off Round is not shown in the chart. Refer to the written instructions for the border after you complete the last round from the chart.
- In the Foundation Round, only one loop will be picked up in every corner.
- Symbols and numbers on the chart:
- If you are using a different number of squares, adjustments to the border pattern might be required. Ensure that you have a multiple of 12 plus an additional 5 stitches on each foundation round edge.
