Tunisian Slippers from a rectangle – Free Crochet Pattern!

A few months back, I made my first pair of Tunisian slippers and that got me thinking about making another with a simpler construction. This pair of Kritika slippers is super easy to make, all you need is a rectangle!

Once you have a rectangle, there is a little bit of shaping needed. It is very easy, I promise! 🙂 I also added a crocheted button to each slipper and I think it looks really cute!

This pattern uses only Tunisian Simple Stitches so it is perfect for beginners!! It is possible to make them with any combination of colors. I changed color after every row but if you’d rather make it with a single color, that would work great too!

These slippers are really quick to make since you are only making rows of Tunisian Simple Stitches – no increases or decreases! It comes in 9 sizes so you can make them for yourself and for your little ones! They would make great gifts too 🙂

The yarn

I have used the Stroll Tweed fingering weight yarn by Knit Picks to make my slippers. It is easy to work with and makes a dense fabric which is stretchy but doesn’t really change shape with wear. The slippers are light and comfortable to wear. I made a pair for my son and he loves them too!

Stroll Tweed yarn by Knit Picks in colors Atlantis Heather and Down Heather - used to make the Kritika Tunisian Crochet Slippers.

The hooks

I am using Knitter’s Pride Ginger Interchangeable Tunisian Crochet Hooks and Clover Amour Hooks to make my slippers.

In Tunisian crochet, we usually use a hook that is at least 2 sizes larger than the hook recommended for the yarn. But, in this project, we require the tension to be really tight so there is little to no space in between stitches. So, we will use the same hook size that is recommended for the yarn. This is to make sure that the fabric will be dense and the slippers will be snug so they won’t come off while wearing.

Here is a review of the Ginger Tunisian Crochet hooks if you’d like to take a look. There are a bunch of other Tunisian crochet hooks that I use. You can read a review of all the hooks I use here.

  2. Scissors
  3. Measuring Tape
  4. Tapestry needle to weave in tails

  7. 2 Buttons (if you don’t make your own)

Experience Level

Gauge

5 rows of 6 Tunisian Simple Stitches is a 2 cm square (with a 3.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook).

Gauge is extremely important in this project. I strongly recommend making a swatch and measuring it before you make the final rectangle for your slippers. If your gauge is different than mine, it will affect the size of the slippers. They may end up being smaller or larger than the measurements mentioned.

 Construction

Each slipper is constructed by making a rectangle with rows of alternating colors and then shaping it into a slipper.

Abbreviations

  1. ch – chain
  2. fs – First Stitch – Skip the first vertical bar of the previous row (the one right under the one on the hook). The loop on the hook will count as the first stitch for every row.
  3. ls – Last Stitch – Pick up the two vertical bars of the last stitch of the previous row, yarn over, pull through both the vertical bars into a loop on the hook.
  4. rep – repeat
  5. tss – Tunisian Simple Stitch– Insert hook in the vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.
  6. yo – yarn over
  7. FP – Forward Pass
  8. RP – Return Pass

Colors

C1: Atlantis Heather
C2: Down Heather

This pattern is written with the colors of the pictured Woman’s slippers.

Adjustments

To adjust the width of the slipper, add additional stitches to your chain.
To adjust the length of the slipper, work fewer or more rows, ending with a C1 row.

Pattern Notes

  1. This pattern is written in English / US terms.
  3. Since we will be using a small hook, there will be some curling, and that is okay.
  4. Each slipper is made from a rectangle, so the number of stitches in every row is the same.

Shaping the slippers

Notes:

  1. Support Video (Shaping):Left Handed |Right Handed
Step 1Count 33 rows from the corner on both long edges of the rectangle and place stitch markers at points A1, A2, B1, and B2.
Step 2With the wrong side facing up, weave a long strand of yarn (enough to cinch close and to seam edges) along the edge in between the two stitch markers at B1 and B2 and cinch close.
Step 3Seam the edge between points (B1, B2) and (C1, C2).
Step 4Seam the edge between points (C1, C2) and (D1, D2). Fasten off and weave in ends.
Tip: For a better fit, overlap points D1 and D2 by about 3 rows.
Step 5With the wrong side facing up, weave a short strand of yarn along the edge in between the two stitch markers at A1 and A2 and cinch close. Weave in ends.

Adding a button

  1. Tutorial and Support Video – How to make a crochet button in 5 minutes
  2. Support Video (Adding a button):Left Handed |Right Handed
  3. Switch to a 3.25 mm (D-3) crochet hook to make the button.
Round 1In a magic ring, make 13 single crochet stitches. Close the ring loosely.
Rounds  2 and 3Make 13 single crochet stitches in the same magic loop – over the single crochet stitches from the previous round. Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Turn the button around, and attach it to a slipper.

Border and Finishing

Notes:

  1. Support Video (Border):Left Handed|Right Handed
  2. Use a 3.25 mm (D-3) crochet hook to make the border.

Make a crab stitch border to complete the slippers. Weave in all ends and block, if desired.
