Chitra Wall Hanging #1: Free Tunisian Crochet Pattern

Creating my first graphghan (my Three Little Kittens Blanket) felt like painting with yarn. Inspired by the technique, I wanted to dive deeper and create something new, so I decided to make some wall hangings. Using bobbins to manage the colors, I had so much fun watching the designs come to life! This wall hanging is the first in a three-part series, and you can choose to make them individually or as a complete set.

The possibilities with this technique are endless, from simple shapes to detailed patterns. Whether you stick to a chart or create your own design, each project feels unique and personal. I hope you have as much fun making this as I did!

Chitra Wall Hanging Collection

This collection features three wall hangings made using the graphghan technique in Tunisian crochet. They’re surprisingly simple to make if you’re comfortable with changing colors mid-row. Each design is created using just one stitch—the Tunisian Simple Stitch.

I made all three wall hangings using just one skein of each color (a total of five colors). You can choose to coordinate the colors across all three or make each one completely different. These patterns are also great for stash busting, as they use only a small amount of each color.

At less than $4 per pattern, you can buy this collection at a 20% discount – only $11.99 (original value – over $15)!

What you will need (with clickable affiliate links)

  1. Yarn: DK (8 ply) weight yarn in 6 colors (200 yards / 180 m / 75 g / 2.6 oz). I used Fiddlesticks Superb 8 yarn in the following colors:
    • Gold – 71013 (5.5 yards / 5 m / 2 g / 0.1 oz)
    • Burgundy – 70048 (13.5 yards / 12.5 m / 5 g / 0.2 oz)
    • Dark Charcoal – 70032 (13.5 yards / 12.5 m / 5 g / 0.2 oz)
    • Peach – 70063 (22 yards / 20 m / 8 g / 0.3 oz)
    • Natural – 70019 (55 yards / 50 m / 22 g / 0.8 oz)
    • Coral – 70055 (70 yards / 64 m / 28 g / 1 oz)
      Note: I used an additional (13.5 yards / 12.5 m / 5 g / 0.2 oz) for tassels in color Coral.
  2. Hook: 6.5 mm (K-10.5) Tunisian crochet hook  Tunisian Crochet Hook
  3. Scissors
  4. Tapestry needle to weave in tails
  5. Stitch markers (optional)
  6. Wooden Dowel

The yarn quantities provided are approximate. Should you opt for a different size or if there are variations in your yarn, hook size, crochet technique, or gauge, the amount of yarn you require could be more or less than specified.

Tunisian Crochet Hooks

I made my wall hangings with a 6.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook from my Denise Interchangeable hook set.

Experience Level

Intermediate – This pattern assumes you have basic knowledge of starting and ending a Tunisian crochet project, executing the  Tunisian Simple Stitch, and switching colors mid-row.

Gauge

14 rows of 17 Tunisian Simple Stitches is a 4” square.

Gauge isn’t crucial for this pattern; feel free to use any yarn and matching hook of your choice without altering the pattern. However, the final size of your project might differ based on your yarn, crocheting style and tension.

Abbreviations

  1. ch – chain
  2. fs – First Stitch – Skip the first vertical bar of the previous row (the one right under the one on the hook). The loop on the hook will count as the first stitch for every row.
  3. ls. – Last Stitch – Pick up the two vertical bars of the last stitch of the previous row, yarn over, pull through both the vertical bars into a loop on the hook.
  4. tss – Tunisian Simple Stitch – Insert hook in the vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.
  5. FR – Foundation Row
  6. BOR – Bind Off Row

Colors

C1: Natural
C2: Coral
C3: Peach
C4: Burgundy
C5: Gold
C6: Dark Charcoal

Size and Adjustments

The finished wall hanging measures 12” x 18” (30 cm x 45 cm) without tassels. The tassels add approximately 2” (5 cm) to the length.

Although the video below was created as a support resource for the Three Little Kittens blanket, the same technique applies to this wall hanging. Practicing with the video will help you master the technique and set you up for success as you work on your wall hanging.

Pattern Notes

  1. This pattern is written in English / US terms.
  2. The instructions below are only for the forward pass. The return pass for every row is the same:
ch1, (yo, pull through two loops)* until one loop remains on the hook.
  3. TIP: Be sure to count all your stitches! This is crucial as it’s quite simple to accidentally add or skip a stitch. The best way to prevent this is by ensuring you keep track of your stitch count.
  4. TIP: Visually inspect your project after every few rows. Failing to count each stitch might lead to errors that become apparent later on.
  5. TIP: Use a separate bobbin for each color change.

Blocking and Finishing

Your wall hanging is almost ready! Before displaying your wall hanging, I recommend adding tassels and blocking it for the best shape. Attach it to a wooden dowel to keep the top stable and make hanging easier.
