Tara Blanket: Free Tunisian Crochet In-The-Round Blanket Pattern

Working in the round is so much fun and even the simplest of patterns look so beautiful with this technique! This blanket features triangles and I love how the clean and simple design still looks so lovely!

This blanket is also a wonderful project, especially if you’re just starting with the in-the-round technique. Made with Tunisian crochet, it features a soothing 4-row repeat pattern that’s so satisfying to see come together. The best part is that you can adjust the size to fit your needs, whether you want it large or small. Making this blanket has been such a joyful experience for me, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy making it just as much!

Tunisian-In-The-Round

Tunisian-in-the-round (TITR) uses a double-ended hook and is worked in a continuous spiral, with one color for the forward pass and another for the return pass. If this technique is new to you, my course covers everything you need to know, step by step.

Tunisian-In-The-Round (TITR) Textured Blanket Collection

This blanket is a part of the ‘ARA’ blanket collection which features five beautiful blankets that are incredibly simple to make if you’re comfortable working in the round. With straightforward, repetitive patterns, each blanket’s design is created using just two stitches! The patterns can be made with any yarn and an appropriate hook without altering the design.

With a variety of designs, this collection offers something for everyone—whether you’re looking to add a new blanket to your home or want to gift a warm, handmade treasure to a loved one.

What you will need (with clickable affiliate links)

  1. Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in two colors – 1570 yards / 1440 m / 720 gms / 25.5 oz. I used KnitPicks Brava in the following colors:
    • Dove Heather – 830 yards / 760 m / 380 gm / 13.5 oz
    • Solstice Heather – 740 yards / 680 m / 340 gm / 12 oz
  2. Hook: A double ended Tunisian Crochet Hook
    • 8 mm (L-11) for the forward pass
    • 6.5 mm (K-10.5) for the return pass
Note: When using a double-ended hook with the same size on both ends, I recommend an 8 mm (L-11) double-ended hook or one that meets gauge.
  3. Scissors
  4. Tapestry needle to weave in tails
  5. Stitch markers (optional)

Yarn requirements are just estimates. If you choose to make a different size or if your yarn, hook size, crochet style, or gauge differ, you might need more / less yarn than mentioned above.

Tunisian Crochet Hooks

I made my blanket with a double ended hook that I created from my Denise Interchangeable hook set. I used a 8 mm hook for the forward pass and a 6.5 mm hook for the return pass. You can find a full review of all the hooks I own on my blog.

Yarn

I used the Brava by Knit Picks to make my blanket. It comes in a large range of colors and one skein each of two colors in the Brava 500 series is perfect for making this blanket!

Experience Level

Intermediate – This pattern assumes you are familiar with the basics of starting and finishing a Tunisian crochet project, as well as working in the round.

Gauge

14 rows of 14 stitches in the blanket pattern is a 4” square.

Gauge isn’t crucial for this pattern; feel free to use any yarn and matching hook of your choice without altering the pattern. However, the final size of your blanket might differ based on your yarn, crocheting style and tension.

Abbreviations

  1. tfs – Tunisian Full StitchInsert hook into the next space between two stitches, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.
  2. tks – Tunisian Knit Stitch – Insert hook in the space between the two vertical bars of the next stitch, pull up a loop on the hook.
  3. trs – Tunisian Reverse StitchInsert hook in the back vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.
  4. tss – Tunisian Simple Stitch– Insert hook in the vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.

  7. twtss-twtks – Twisted Tunisian Simple Stitch and Twisted Tunisian Knit Stitch in the same stitch
  8. tks-tss – Tunisian Knit Stitch and Tunisian Simple Stitch in the same stitch.
  9. yo – yarn over
  10. BOR – Bind Off Round

Size and Adjustments

40” x 40”

As this blanket is worked in the round, you have the flexibility to easily adjust its size. You can make it larger or smaller than the size specified in the pattern by adding or removing rounds from both the central pattern and the border.

Forward and Return Pass Instructions

Note: If this is your first time working in the round, I highly recommend watching the accompanying tutorial before diving in.

To work in the round, you’ll need a double-ended hook. In this pattern, I used an 8 mm hook for the forward pass and a 6.5 mm hook for the return pass. You will need a different strand of yarn for each pass, with color C1 for the forward pass and color C2 for the return pass.

Forward Pass: You will pick up loops on your hook from one end (the 8 mm hook). The right side of your project will be facing you.

Return Pass: You will remove loops from your hook using the other end (the 6.5 mm hook). Make sure the wrong side of your project is facing you. To remove loops from your hook:
– At the beginning of your blanket – yo, pull through one loop.
– At all other times – yo, pull through 2 loops until there are 3 or 4 loops left on the hook.

Remember, each time you switch between the two passes, you’ll need to turn your work and slide your loops to the opposite end of the hook.

Tunisian Crochet Blanket Pattern Notes

  • This pattern is written in English / US terms.
  • The specific instructions for the forward and return passes are not included in the written instructions, as they are detailed separately above.
  • With every round, 8 stitches are added, resulting in an increase of 8 stitches per round.
  • Tips:
    • Keep counting your stitches. Mistakes are easily noticeable in this design, so thorough counting is crucial.
    • Regularly inspect your blanket visually after completing a few rounds to catch errors early.
    • To help keep track of your corners, use stitch markers to indicate the corner stitches.

Pattern Repeats

All stitches are made in the next available stitch unless mentioned otherwise. Repeats are mentioned in this pattern in three different ways:

  1. 4 trs ->
trs in the next 4 stitches
  2. (2 tks, 4 trs) * 2->
    2 tks, 4 trs, 2 tks, 4 trs
  3. [twtss-twtks, (2 tks, 4 trs) * 2, tks-tss]*2->

BLOCKING

I recommend blocking your blanket with your preferred method of blocking before use. For my own blanket, I chose to steam block it since I used acrylic yarn.
