Ira Tunisian Mosaic Shawl – Free Pattern!

Here’s another adventure of mine with Tunisian Mosaic crochet! I made this shawl when I was learning the technique, it was one of the first few projects that I made in a triangle.

I designed it to be a mosaic sampler that is made up of 5 different repeating patterns and it was a lot of fun to see how the different patterns worked up.

I also experimented with a new border and I love how it turned out! My shawl has an amazing drape and is nice and warm 🙂 I hope you will enjoy making it as much as I did!

Ira Mosaic Shawl by KnitterKnotter is a triangle shawl made in jewel tones (red, blue, purple).

The yarn

I used Chroma Fingering Yarn by KnitPicks in colors Galentine and Bare to make my shawl. This yarn is warm and cozy and my shawl has an amazing drape.

The hooks

I used my Knitter’s Pride Ginger Interchangeable Tunisian Crochet Hooks to make this sweater.

Here is a review of the Ginger Tunisian Crochet hooks if you’d like to take a look. There are a bunch of other Tunisian crochet hooks that I use. You can read a review of all the hooks I use here.

Gauge

The edge of my shawl is ~ 2” (5 cms) after completion of Row 7.

Gauge is not important in this pattern, you can use any yarn you like with an appropriate hook and the pattern will not change. The size of your shawl will vary depending on your style of crocheting and tension.

The Ira Tunisian Mosaic Shawl by KnitterKnotter features an I-Cord border.

Section J – Border

Row 116: [W] fs, tfs, 229 tss, tks-tss, twtss-twtks, 229 tss, tfs, ls [466 sts]

Row 117: [W] fs, tfs, 231 tss, tks-tss, twtss-twtks, 231 tss, tfs, ls [470 sts]

Binding Off

I-Cord Border Bind Off

Notes:

  1. I strongly recommend viewing the video tutorial before you start.
  2. Do not cut yarn after completing Section J.
  3. This pattern uses a 4 stitch I-Cord to bind off.
  4. TIP: It is possible for your I-Cord to unravel while working on it, it happened to me multiple times. Use a lifeline (yarn or stitch markers) after every few rows of your I- Cord so you won’t have to unravel the entire I-Cord if that happens. If you’d like help with this, I’ve covered this in my support video.

I-Cord Row instructions:
All rows except for the Foundation and Bind Off rows are made exactly the same way. Since we are binding off and making a border at once, the stitch we use to join the I-Cord to the shawl will change based on the bind off pattern:
Step 1 – Remove 3 loops from the hook and move them to a stitch holder, yarn over, pull through [1 loop on the hook].
Step 2 – Pick the next loop from the stitch holder, yarn over, pull through [2 loops on the hook].
Step 3 – Pick the remaining two loops from the stitch holder, yarn over, pull through both loops [3 loops on the hook].
Step 4 – Join with the intended stitch in Row 117 [4 loops on the hook].

Bind Off Row instructions:
fs, 233 tss, tfs, tss, twtss, tfs, 233 tss, ls

Instructions to bind off and make the I-Cord border together:
Row 1: Starting at the edge stitch, ch 3, make the foundation row stitches in the back loops (3 loops on the hook). Join with Row 117 like you’d make a tfs (4 loops on the hook).
This will be the Foundation Row for the I-Cord Border Bind Off.

Row 2 onwards: Repeat all 4 steps from the I-Cord Row instructions above and follow the Bind Off Row instructions to figure out the the intended stitch for joining on every row:
Join 233 rows with a tss,
Join 1 row with a tfs,
Join 1 row with a tss,
Join 1 row with a twtss,
Join 1 row with a tfs,
Join 233 rows with a tss,
Join 1 row with a tfs

Bind Off Row for the I-Cord: Join 1 row with the ls, while binding off with a slip stitch. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Alternate Border Bind Off

Row 118: fs, 233 tss, tfs, tss, twtss, tfs, 233 tss, ls.
This will be the bind off row. You will make a slip stitch every time you pick up a loop on your hook. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Blocking

I recommend blocking your shawl with your preferred method of blocking before use.

This is beautiful! Could you make two of them, seam together and bind off to make a throw? Would it be too light using the fingering yarn?

Arunima

Saturday 1st of July 2023

You can definitely make two and seam them together to make a throw! It would be pretty light (and small) for a throw and it completely depends on what you are looking for. I would recommend swatching with heavier weight yarn to see how you like it before deciding one way or the other.

Just started and I am literally hooked! This is my first tunisian mosaic project, and your instructions and tutorial videos are really easy to follow and understand. Thank you for this pattern! I am looking forward to continue with this shawl!

Erika

Tuesday 2nd of May 2023

@Arunima, I definitely will! I just finished row 81 and I am fairly sure I found a little "error". The row looks like this:

Row 81: [C] fs, tfs, tss, etss, 3 tss, (etss, tss, etss, 3 tss) * 25, (etss, tss) * 2, tks-tss, twtss-twtks, (tss, etss) * 2, (3 tss, etss, tss, etss) * 25, tss, etss, 3 tss, tfs, ls [326 sts]

The last "3 tss" in the row should just be (1) tss.

Thank you for an awesome pattern! I am really enjoying crocheting it and am very much looking forward to waring this super cozy and fabulous shawl :D
