Tunisian Crochet Blanket CAL 2021 – Square #21

Welcome to square 21 of the Tunisian Blanket CAL of 2021! This is my first CAL where I am collaborating with other designers. I am going to make my blanket / afghan with everyone and hope to learn some new Tunisian crochet stitches and techniques along the way 🙂

If you are new to the CAL, click here to find all the introductory information including the schedule, supplies, and giveaways.

If you are new to Tunisian crochet, I hosted a CAL in 2020 that was designed to teach Tunisian crochet to beginners. If this one seems advanced, you are welcome to check that out and practice a few basic stitches before you come back to this one. Click here to view the beginner CAL of 2020.

This week’s square is designed by Lori from Aklori Designs. It is a lovely open lacey design that can be created in either a single or multiple color options. Continue reading for the details of this square and for the link to the pattern.

Square #21 – Piazza Square – designed by Lori from Aklori Designs

Square #21 is designed by Lori from Aklori Designs. This square is built using Tunisian Simple Stitch and Tunisian Knit Stitch to create a beautiful lacey design.

The twenty first square crochet afghan pattern from the KnitterKnotter blanket CAL of 2021

Here is my square – This is the first square where I used all 4 colors of my Wool of the Andes Superwash yarn by KnitPicks.

Knit stitch and simple stitches worked together to make the twenty first square of the Tunisian Blanket CAL of 2021.

My Notes

Here are some things I noted while working on the square:

  1. It is important to read the instructions carefully, this square will need your complete attention. Don’t stop counting!
  2. Changing color the way I did is complex and will need some practice to get tension during the transitions right.
  3. This square needs to be blocked aggressively to open up the lace pattern.
  4. I changed color as seen in the picture of my square. I recommend going over the entire pattern in advance and figuring out where you want your color changes to happen. It is hard to keep track if you freehand it.

Adjustments

For width – add / remove stitches in multiples of two – the central lace pattern can be made smaller or larger.
For height – add / remove rows in the center of the pattern, as needed.

It is also possible to add extra rows to the border OR make a separate border using traditional crochet to increase the size of this block.

What I did

I used 4 colors to make my square using the Wool of the Andes Superwash yarn: White, Brass Heather, Amethyst Heather and Cobblestone Heather.

I used a 8 mm Tunisian crochet hook to make this square.

I used the stitch markers from Walnut Farm Design to keep track of my stitches and I wet blocked my square by soaking it in warm water and pinning it to my blocking mat until dry.

Yardage and Size

My square is 12″ x 12″ in size (along the edges) and used about 110 yards (100 m) of yarn and weighs 1.8 oz (50 gms).

Important notes

The copyright for each pattern is held by the designer. You may ask for additional resources and tutorials from the designer of the square only. No one else can make a full tutorial of the pattern unless permitted by the designer. I have included my notes and links to my tutorials that I think might be helpful in making the square but those do not supersede the instructions and tutorials provided by the designer.

I really like the way the color changes you used accentuate the block design. A pop of the amethyst color would lovely-maybe as the final border.

@Barbara Colvin, thank you! I really enjoyed the color changes in this block. I agree, an amethyst border would be lovely!
