Simple Tunisian Crochet Slippers: Free Pattern!

This is my second ‘slippers from a rectangle‘ pattern. I love Tunisian crochet and I love comfy slippers, so welcome to the newest pattern for both!

I now have a number of Tunisian crochet slippers patterns and the newest pattern for your pair of Anuradha slippers, is super easy to make, all you need is a rectangle!

The stitches have this lovely stretch, making these slippers ultra-comfy. I can’t wait to hear how you enjoy making them!

What's fun about these is that they start as a mere rectangle and magically transform into a slipper. And guess what? The stitches have this lovely stretch, making these slippers ultra-comfy!

Yarn

I have used the Stroll Tweed fingering weight yarn by Knit Picks to make my slippers. It is easy to work with and makes a dense fabric which is stretchy but doesn’t really change shape with wear. The slippers are light and comfortable to wear. I made a pair for my daughter who loves them too!

I’ve used three gorgeous colors for my Anuradha slippers pattern: Persimmon Heather, Barley Heather and Down Heather.

The hooks

I am using Knitter’s Pride Ginger Interchangeable Tunisian Crochet Hooks and Clover Amour Hooks to make my slippers.

Here is a review of the Ginger Tunisian Crochet hooks if you’d like to take a look. There are a bunch of other Tunisian crochet hooks that I use. You can read a review of all the hooks I use here.

What you will need (with clickable affiliate links)

  1. Yarn: Fingering weight yarn in at least 2 colors. See the Sizing section for yardage.
  2. Hook: 3.5 mm (E -4) Tunisian crochet hook, 3.25 mm (D-3) crochet hook
  3. Scissors
  4. Measuring Tape
  5. Tapestry needle to weave in tails
  6. Stitch markers
  7. Yarn bowl (optional)
  8. Embellishments (buttons / beads / any other)

Experience Level

Easy – The pattern expects basic knowledge of starting and ending a Tunisian crochet project.

Gauge

36 rows of 24 Tunisian Full Stitches is a 4” / 10 cm square (with a 3.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook).

If your gauge isn’t the same as mine, the slipper size might vary. They could turn out smaller or larger than the given measurements.

 Construction

Creating each slipper involves shaping a simple rectangle into a perfect slipper.

Abbreviations

  1. ch – chain
  2. fs – First Stitch – Skip the first vertical bar of the previous row (the one right under the one on the hook). The loop on the hook will count as the first stitch for every row.
  3. ls – Last Stitch – Pick up the two vertical bars of the last stitch of the previous row, yarn over, pull through both the vertical bars into a loop on the hook.
  4. tfs – Tunisian Full Stitch – Insert hook in the vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.
  5. trs – Tunisian Reverse Stitch Insert hook in the back vertical bar, yarn over,  pull up a loop on the hook.
  6. FP – Forward Pass
  7. RP – Return Pass

Colors

C1: Persimmon Heather
C2: Barley Heather
C3: Down Heather

Adjustments

Making adjustments to these slippers is very easy.
– For height adjustments, add or remove rows in sets of 3.
– For width adjustments, add or remove stitches as necessary.

Remember, Tunisian Full stitches stretch quite a bit. So, if the slippers feel a bit roomy, consider removing some rows (in multiples of three) for a snugger fit.

Pattern Notes

  1. This pattern is written in English / US terms.
  2. The rectangle will curl quite a bit; that is expected because of the Tunisian Full Stitches.
  3. Each slipper is made from a rectangle, the number of stitches will remain the same throughout the rectangle.
  4. The instructions below are only for the forward pass. The return pass for every row is the same:
    • ch1, (yo, pull through two loops)* until one loop remains on the hook.

Instructions (Make 2)

Note:  Support Video (Making the rectangle): Left Handed |Right Handed

Foundation Row [C1] : Using the size 3.5 mm (US E-4) Tunisian crochet hook, chain 31 (35, 39, 41, 45)[49, 49, 55, 63].
Make the foundation row stitches in the back loops of the chain.

Row 1 [C2]: fs, 29 (33, 37, 39, 43)[47, 47, 53, 61] trs, ls.

Row 2 [C1/C2]: fs, 29 (33, 37, 39, 43)[47, 47, 53, 61] tfs, ls.
Skip the space between the last two stitches of the previous row.

Row 3 [C3]: fs, 29 (33, 37, 39, 43)[47, 47, 53, 61] tfs, ls.
Skip the space between the first two stitches of the previous row.

Rows 4 – 30 (36, 42, 51, 57) [63, 66, 69, 75]: Rows 1 to 3. Alternate colors C1, C2 after every repeat.

Last Row [C3]: Repeat Row 1. This will be the bind off row. You will make a slip stitch every time you pick up a loop on your hook. Fasten off and weave in ends. There is no return pass for this row.

Blocking

This fabric curls a lot because of the Tunisian Full stitches. I recommend blocking your rectangle before you start shaping your slippers.

Shaping and Border

Note: Support Video (Making the rectangle): Left Handed |Right Handed

The shaping will be slightly different for the two slippers because they are mirror images of each other. Do the following steps for each slipper, follow the picture below to identify the various points mentioned in the steps below.

Simple Tunisian Crochet Slippers: Free Pattern by KnitterKnotter.

Step 1: Fold the fabric into thirds and add a stitch marker to point B.

Step 2: Place the fabric with the right side facing up. Thread a tapestry needle with the yarn color C3 and weave it through the top row from point K to B (until the stitch marker). Remove the stitch marker.

Step 3: Fold the fabric such that points K and B meet. Insert the needle through the corner stitch at point K and cinch the fabric. Make sure you do not pull too tightly.

Step 4: Seam the edges created by the cinched fabric. Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends securely. See the Support Video for details.

Step 5: Flip the cinched fabric inside out to bring the right side of the fabric outside.

Step 6: Fold the edge (E, D) into half and mark the center point F with a stitch marker. Seam the edges (D, F) and (E, F).

Step 7: With a 3.25 mm (D-3) traditional crochet hook, make a crab stitch border (with the right side of the project facing up) in the following order:
A -> (D, E) -> K for the right slipper
K -> (D, E) -> A for the left slipper
Cut yarn and weave in all ends.

Step 8: Fold the fabric starting at the corner A over the part below the cinched edge and sew them together with a tapestry needle.

Adding Embellishments

Personalize your slippers by adding beads, buttons, or any other embellishments that suit your style.
