Tunisian Mosaic crochet is my new favorite technique and I am having such a great time trying new patterns with it!
This pillow is my first project that I made with a never-ending repeat pattern. It was a great way to practice repeating patterns for me.
It makes for a great accent pillow that can be used by itself or combined with other pillows (mosaic or plain) to make your living space bright and comfortable.
I made the front and back of my pillow differently – the back is a plain fabric of Tunisian Simple Stitches – but you could get creative with this one and make both sides with the mosaic pattern too! I hope you will enjoy making yours 🙂
PS: This pattern reminds me of climbing vines, hence the name ‘Latika’ which means ‘vine’ in Hindi.

The yarn
I used Brava Sport Yarn by Knit Picks to make my pillow. This yarn was great to work with and it comes in a wide range of colors so there are a lot of color options to choose from.

The hooks
I use a hook from my interchangeable Denise hook set to make the panels of my pillow and a Clover Amour Hook to join them.
In Tunisian crochet, we usually use a hook that is at least 2 sizes larger than the hook recommended for the yarn. You can read a review of all the hooks I use here.

Gauge
There are two gauges for this pattern (for the front and back panels).
Back Panel Gauge
15 rows of 16 Tunisian Simple Stitches is a 4” (10 cm) square.
Front Panel Gauge
16 rows of 16 stitches in the mosaic pattern is a 4” (10 cm) square.
Use the following pattern to make your swatch:
[C1] Row 1: Ch 18, make the foundation row stitches in the back loops of the chain.
[C2] Row 2: fs, 16 tss, ls
Rows 3 – 18: Follow the pattern repeat chart and make 2 repeats (that will be a total of 2 repeats plus 2 edge stitches).
[C2] BOR: Repeat Row 2. This will be the bind off row. You will make a slip stitch every time you pick up a loop on your hook. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Measure gauge now, do not include the edge stitches and rows.

Adjustments
This pattern is a repeat of 8 rows and 8 stitches –
• To adjust width: Start with a chain of a multiple of 8 + 2 edge stitches.
• To adjust height: Add / remove rows as needed.
If you make an adjustment to height, make sure you end with the same color as the starting row.
Abbreviations
- ch – chain
- fs – First Stitch – Skip the first vertical bar of the previous row (the one right under the one on the hook). The loop on the hook will count as the first stitch for every row.
- ls – Last Stitch – Pick up the two vertical bars of the last stitch of the previous row, yarn over, pull through both the vertical bars into a loop on the hook.
- tss – Tunisian Simple Stitch– Insert hook in the vertical bar, yarn over, pull up a loop on the hook.
- etss – Front Post Extended Tunisian Simple Stitch – Locate t he stitch that’s two rows below the next stitch. Pick up the two vertical bars (front and back bars) from above the return pass chain, yarn over, pull through, chain 1.
- FR – Foundation Row
- BOR – Bind off Row
Colors
C1: Cream
C2: Wine
Pattern Notes
- This pattern is written in English / US terms.
- The front and back panels are made differently –
- The front panel is the mosaic pattern.
- The back panel is made of Tunisian Simple Stitches entirely.
Note: Both the front and back panels can be made with the mosaic pattern, you’d have to make two of the front panels.
- Make your starting chain and edge stitches slightly loose because you will join the front and back panels by crocheting into them.
- Since the front and back panels are different, the row count is different for them. This is to accommodate for the difference in gauge of Tunisian Simple Stitches and the mosaic pattern.
- The instructions below are only for the forward pass. The return pass for every row is the same:
- ch1, (yo, pull through two loops)* until one loop remains on the hook.
- This pattern comes with stitch tutorials and other support videos. Scroll down for all video tutorials.
Instructions
Front Panel
[C1] Row 1 (FR): This is the Foundation Row.
Chain 50, make the foundation row stitches in the back loops of the chain.
[C2] Row 2: fs, 48 tss, ls.
[C1] Row 3: fs, [(etss, 3 tss) * 2] * 6, ls.
[C2] Row 4: fs, (2 tss, etss, 3 tss, 2 etss) * 6, ls.
[C1] Row 5: fs, [(tss, etss) * 3, 2 tss] * 6, ls.
[C2] Row 6: fs, (etss, 3 tss, etss, 2 tss, etss) * 6, ls.
[C1] Row 7: fs, (2 tss, etss, 3 tss, etss, tss) * 6, ls.
[C2] Row 8: fs, (etss, 2 tss, 2 etss, 3 tss) * 6, ls.
[C1] Row 9: fs, (tss, etss, 3 tss, etss, tss, etss) * 6, ls.
[C2] Row 10: fs, (2 tss, 2 etss, 2 tss, etss, tss) * 6, ls.
Rows 11 – 49: Repeat Rows 3 to 10 until you reach Row 49.
[C1] BOR: Repeat Row 2.
This will be the bind off row. You will make a slip stitch every time you pick up a loop on your hook. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Back Panel
Row 1 (FR): This is the Foundation Row.
With C1, chain 50, make the foundation row stitches in the back loops of the chain.
Rows 2 – 45: fs, 48 tss, ls.
BOR: Repeat Row 2.
This will be the bind off row. You will make a slip stitch every time you pick up a loop on your hook. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Joining
With a 5.5 mm hook, join the front and back panels with C1 with single crochet stitches along the edges, separated with a chain at each corner. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Notes:
- The front and back panels have unequal number of rows so make sure you evenly space your join stitches.
- While joining, make sure both panels are facing outwards.
- Stuff the pillow form inside after joining 3 edges and then join the 4th edge to complete the pillow.
- For symmetrical left and right edges, make the single crochet stitch in the space next to the edge stitch on each row of both panels.
Chart (Front Panel)
The black and white squares are not a part of the pattern, they indicate that one color is used for the entire row and that we change color after every row.
The row repeats are separated by blue lines and the stitch repeats are separated by red lines.
- Stitches 10 to 41 are a repeat of stitches 2 to 9.
- Rows 10 to 42 are a repeat of Rows 3 to 10.
Row 1 is the Foundation Row, the Bind Off Row is not shown in the chart.
Note that this is a repeating pattern so the chart does NOT show the entire pillow pattern. Keep an eye on the row and stitch numbers in the chart and cross reference the written instructions if you need help with figuring out the repeats.
There are no X’s to indicate the Front Post Extended Stitches in the chart below. I have a photo tutorial and a video below that explains how to add the X’s to your chart in the ‘Support Videos’ section.
